Know Our Vision & Mission
"Prayagraj is the 11th most populous urban city in India, largest urban agglomeration in Uttar Pradesh."
The city of Prayagraj lies on the right bank of the Ganges River, which acts as both a physical and administrative boundary of the city. In the early period, the settlement of the city developed mainly along the banks of the Ganga and gradually expanded in different directions with the growth of population and activities. Due to its favorable geographical location and the presence of the sacred confluence known as the Triveni Sangam, the city became an important religious and cultural center.
During the Mughal period, the emperor Akbar built the famous Allahabad Fort near the Sangam and renamed the city Allahabad. Over time, the city developed as an important administrative and commercial center. With the growth of transport facilities such as roads, railways, and river routes, trade and economic activities expanded rapidly. The city also became known for educational, administrative, and cultural institutions.
In the modern period, Prayagraj continued to expand towards the north, west, and south directions. The development of transportation networks, bridges, and urban infrastructure accelerated the expansion of the city. At present, the city is spread over an area of about 260 square kilometers, forming an important urban center of the state of Uttar Pradesh and remaining a major religious, cultural, and administrative city of India.

in the 7th century and described Prayag as a major religious center. During the medieval period, the Mughal emperor Akbar built a large fort at the Sangam in 1583 and renamed the city Allahabad, meaning “City of God.” The Allahabad Fort became an important administrative and military center of the Mughal Empire. Later, during British rule, Allahabad became an important political and administrative center. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British strengthened their control and developed the city with railways, roads, and educational institutions.
Allahabad also played a major role in India’s freedom movement and was associated with leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Motilal Nehru. For many centuries the city remained widely known as Allahabad. However, in 2018, the government of Uttar Pradesh officially changed the name back to Prayagraj to reflect its ancient historical and religious identity. Since October 2018, the official name of the city has been Prayagraj. Thus, the city has been known by two major names in history—Prayag/Prayagraj in ancient times and Allahabad during the Mughal and British periods—before returning to the name Prayagraj in the modern era.
